Jim Maresh has spent his entire life among these vines, continuing the work started by his family while quietly establishing himself as one of the finest growers in the Willamette Valley. His wines possess a level of precision and transparency that reminds me of the great village wines of Vosne-Romanée, not because they taste like Burgundy, but because they share that same effortless balance, haunting perfume, and ability to express place with remarkable clarity. The Dundee Hills remains my favorite corner of Oregon for Pinot Noir, producing wines that lean toward elegance over power, with captivating finesse and charm. Freshly bottled only a few months ago, this 2024 is already showing beautifully, but I firmly believe it will blossom dramatically over the next six to twelve months, much like young Burgundy settling into itself after its first years in bottle.

The Willamette Valley stretches roughly 150 miles from Portland south toward Eugene, protected by Oregon's Coast Range to the west and the Cascade Mountains to the east. This unique geography funnels cool Pacific air through the Van Duzer Corridor, preserving freshness while allowing Pinot Noir to ripen slowly over a long growing season. The valley is divided into several distinct AVAs, each with its own personality. Ribbon Ridge offers structure and dark fruit; Eola-Amity Hills produces savory, wind-swept wines; Yamhill-Carlton leans darker and richer; Chehalem Mountains delivers tremendous diversity; and the Dundee Hills, where this wine originates, has become the spiritual heart of Oregon Pinot Noir. The famed red Jory soils—ancient volcanic basalt weathered over millions of years—are exceptionally well-drained and naturally low in fertility, forcing vines to struggle and produce wines of remarkable purity, perfume, and silky texture. It is no coincidence that many of Oregon's most iconic estates chose the Dundee Hills as their home.

The Maresh family helped define this region long before Oregon became internationally recognized. Jim Maresh farms some of the oldest and most revered vineyards in the Dundee Hills, many planted decades ago by his father, pioneering winegrower Jim Maresh Sr. Rather than chasing ripeness or extraction, Jim focuses on farming that allows each vintage to speak honestly. Fermentations rely on native yeasts, extraction remains gentle, and oak is carefully restrained, allowing the vineyard—not the cellar—to define the finished wine. The result is Pinot Noir of remarkable transparency, wines that reward patience and evolve gracefully over many years while remaining wonderfully drinkable in their youth.

The 2024 Dundee Hills Pinot Noir immediately draws you in with aromas of wild raspberry, Rainier cherry, crushed rose petals, red plum, orange peel, forest floor, and delicate baking spice, layered over the unmistakable earthy minerality that defines the Dundee Hills. On the palate, it is graceful and finely etched, with silky tannins, vibrant acidity, and remarkable precision carrying the wine through an elegant, lingering finish. I highly recommend decanting this bottle for about 30 minutes, which allows the aromatics to unfurl beautifully. While already immensely enjoyable, this is a wine just beginning to reveal its true personality and one that will continue to blossom over the next year before rewarding careful cellaring for the next decade or more. Pair it with roast duck, cedar plank salmon, mushroom risotto, herb-roasted chicken, grilled pork tenderloin, or simply a wedge of aged Comté alongside good conversation. These are the kinds of wines that remind you why Pinot Noir remains one of the world's most captivating grape varieties.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0694/6937/2572/files/ArterberryMareshPinotNoir2024-29-06-202613-15-24.png?v=1782764174
https://thecaubleist.com/products/arterberry-maresh-pinot-noir-dundee-hills-willamette-valley-oregon-2024
