Pecina Reserva, Rioja DOCa, Spain 2017

Today’s stunning red comes from one of the last great traditionalists in Rioja, Pedro Peciña of Señorío de P. Peciña. In an era when so many Rioja reds seem designed to impress during a five-minute tasting, Peciña reminds us that some of the world's greatest bottles still reward patience, conversation, and an unhurried evening around the table. Having spent decades overseeing viticulture at the legendary La Rioja Alta before founding his own tiny estate, Pedro devoted himself to preserving a style of Rioja that prizes nuance over power, savor over sweet fruit, and trusted tradition over technology. The 2017 Señorío de P. Peciña Rioja Reserva is impossible not to admire once you've spent an evening with it.

Like all of Peciña's finest wines, this Reserva begins with exceptional old vines. The blend is led by Tempranillo (95%), supported by small amounts of Graciano (3%) and Garnacha (2%), all harvested by hand from organically farmed vineyards averaging more than 35 years of age in San Vicente de la Sonsierra. Here, poor limestone-clay soils scattered with alluvial stones naturally limit yields while the cooling influence of the nearby Sierra Cantabria preserves freshness even in warm vintages. Rather than chasing concentration through manipulation, Peciña allows the vineyard to speak for itself—fermenting with native yeasts before relying on time, gravity, and meticulous cellar work to shape the wine into something remarkably transparent and complete.

There is nothing hurried about how this wine comes into the world. Fruit is harvested entirely from organically farmed vineyards rooted in the limestone and clay soils of San Vicente de la Sonsierra, fermented with native yeasts, then aged for a remarkable three years in well-seasoned American oak barrels, not new ones, followed by another year and a half resting peacefully in bottle before release. Perhaps most remarkably, the wine is still racked every six months by gravity, barrel-to-barrel, exactly as Rioja's finest estates did generations ago. It is an enormously labor-intensive practice that very few producers still undertake, but one that gives the wine its remarkable clarity, elegance, and natural stability without fining or filtration.

The result feels wonderfully vintage in style. Rather than overwhelming the palate with oak or extraction, it unfolds gradually with aromas of dried cherry, blood orange, cedar chest, worn leather, tobacco leaf, dried roses, forest floor, and sweet baking spice. The palate is medium-bodied, silky, and beautifully composed, with mature red fruit wrapped around bright acidity and impossibly fine tannins that carry effortlessly through a long, savory finish. It possesses that rare quality found in the finest traditional Riojas: the ability to seem simultaneously mature and youthful, comforting yet vibrant. If your cellar holds bottles from López de Heredia, La Rioja Alta, or the old wines of CVNE, you'll immediately recognize the family resemblance, but Peciña remains one of the category's greatest values.

Serve it around 62°F in a large Burgundy stem and give it thirty minutes in a decanter if possible. It positively sings alongside slow-braised lamb necks, roast quail with wild mushrooms, or a simple plate of jamón Ibérico and Manchego. While already entering a gorgeous window of maturity, this Reserva still has another decade or more of graceful evolution ahead of it - so don’t hesitate to stash aside a few extra bottles.

https://thecaubleist.com/products/bodegas-hermanos-pecina-senorio-de-p-pecina-reserva-rioja-doca-spain-2017
