Years ago, Camino Cellars winemaker Tadeo Borchardt traveled through southern France with Kermit Lynch and his longtime mentor Bruce Neyers, eventually arriving to visit Maxime Magnon, one of the most gifted and quietly influential vignerons working in the Corbières region today. The experience deepened Tadeo’s affection for the perfumed, savory wines of the Mediterranean, particularly those made from old-vine Carignan. His 2022 “Higgledy Piggledy” is a distinctly Californian continuation of that conversation: sun-warmed and generous, but also hauntingly aromatic, and charged with the sort of energizing freshness that makes an open bottle disappear with alarming speed.

Tadeo’s path to his own cellar has been anything but conventional. He began as a sixth-grade teacher in the Arizona desert before moving to Sonoma County in 2002 to pursue wine, eventually gaining experience in New Zealand and traveling extensively through the vineyards and cellars of France and Italy. Since 2004, he has made wine for the Neyers family in Napa Valley, quietly developing the sensitivity to old vineyards and traditional cellar work that now defines Camino Cellars. His own wines remain minuscule in production, thoughtful without becoming precious, and grounded in a simple conviction: intensity need not mean heaviness, and the most compelling wines are ultimately the ones you most want to drink.

“Higgledy Piggledy” is composed of 90% Carignan from Kettleman Vineyard in Lodi and 10% Mourvèdre from the historic Evangelho Vineyard in Contra Costa County. The Kettleman Carignan was planted during the 1950s in deep, sandy soil, while Evangelho’s Mourvèdre dates to an astonishing 1890, ancient, dry-farmed vines surviving on their own roots in the windblown sands near the Sacramento–San Joaquin River Delta. These are not tidy young vineyards engineered for uniformity and maximum production. They are old, irregular, stubborn places, shaped by decades of drought, wind, and human care, the sort of vineyards whose twisted vines and mingled histories make the wine’s wonderfully disorderly name feel entirely appropriate.

There is equally little artifice in the cellar. The grapes are fermented entirely as whole clusters with their native yeasts, allowing the stems to bring perfume, spice, and an appealingly savory structure to Carignan’s naturally vibrant fruit. The wine then rests in neutral French and Austrian oak, vessels chosen not to flavor the wine but to let it soften and gather itself slowly. It is bottled without fining or filtration, at just 13% alcohol, preserving the freshness and aromatic detail that first drew Tadeo toward the old-fashioned reds of southern France. Only 100 cases were made, a tiny, personal wine whose modest scale feels inseparable from its character.

The result is gloriously alive in the glass, unfolding with wild blackberry, sour cherry, pomegranate, dried violets, cracked pepper, rosemary, warm earth, and the faint resinous perfume of Mediterranean scrub. The palate is juicy and supple but never sweet or heavy, with dark red fruit carried by bright acidity, gently rustic tannins, and a savory mineral finish. Serve it around 60°F in a large Burgundy stem, perhaps with grilled pork sausages, or a platter of charred vegetables with anchovy and olive oil. It is drinking beautifully now and should continue to evolve for another five to eight years, though its irresistible combination of fragrance, energy, and easygoing charm may make patience difficult.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0694/6937/2572/files/CaminoCellarsHiggledyPiggledyCalifornia2022WEB.png?v=1783704604
