It really has become something of an annual pilgrimage. There’s a sacred, frozen-in-time magic here that locals tapped into long ago, and there’s now a brilliant grower waiting around every steep hairpin road. Yet even with such a wealth of talent, a few producers simply win your heart. So of course I perked up when a brand-new white wine from Ghostnote crossed my desk, and my neurons really started firing when I saw it was a homage to Graves Blanc, those beautiful Sémillon–Sauvignon Blanc blends of Bordeaux. Then, I saw the fruit source and I knew it would be a wine to remember: Gist Ranch. Planted by the legendary Fogarty estate in 1999, this vineyard clings to a ridge of fractured bedrock at 2,400 feet. And you can feel it in the wine. Bright and ripe with Sauvignon’s crackling minerality and Sémillon’s lovely texture, the 2024 Graves Coast Blanc is a wine made out of love—not celebrity—and it comes with an insanely attractive price to match. It will be in my drinking rotation all summer. But be warned: just 250 cases were made, and I was only able to carve out a sliver for you all.

Ghostnote is the work of Brad Friedman, one of the most quietly skilled young winemakers in the Santa Cruz Mountains—though his résumé reads like someone in his third decade of doing this. Born in Baltimore and raised around wine thanks to his father (a longtime fine-wine distributor), Brad took the science route: a Master’s Degree in Food Science & Technology from UC Davis and undergraduate degrees in Biotechnology and Chemistry from Indiana University, where he also studied jazz drums—a detail that explains his label’s name. Before launching Ghostnote, he worked harvests in Napa, Sonoma, Portugal, Austria, New Zealand, South Africa, and Australia, then returned to the mountains to take cellar positions at Ridge Monte Bello, Big Basin, and now Thomas Fogarty, where he oversees daily production. Brad’s winemaking philosophy mirrors jazz rhythm more than wine marketing: subtlety over power, tension over polish, vineyard over ego. It’s his way of bottling the quiet details most wines smooth over.

The fruit for Ghostnote’s 2024 “Graves Coast Blanc” came entirely from the Gist Vineyard and was handpicked under cool fall conditions and co-fermented as one lot. The blend, 63% Sauvignon Blanc and 37% Sémillon, aged 17 months in an incredible array of vessels: stainless steel, large Slavonian botti, cigar barrels, hogsheads, and barriques. Bottled unfined and unfiltered with just a touch of SO2, the final wine checks in at 13.9% and a mouthwatering 3.25 pH. If you love old-school whites, this is a dream.

In the glass, the wine shines a radiant white-yellow with flashes of green. With only a few swirls, it bursts from the glass with youthful, exuberant aromas of gooseberry, citrus oil and grapefruit. Allow it to warm up a few degrees and lovely notes of chamomile, ocean rock, and mountain herbs join the fruit. What really impressed me, though, is the generous palate: thanks to 17 months in a variety of oak vessels, there is a plush texture to match the electric flavors. Serve the wine cool, not cold, at around 50-55°F, and enjoy in whatever stem is closest. You can’t go wrong. This will pair beautifully with any light fish fare or chèvre from your local market.
