Anyone who dines in the world’s top Spanish restaurants or follows Spain-focused wine writers and critics is probably well familiar with Luis Peique.  The heavy bottle, luxurious labeling, and of course the mesmerizing wines themselves all recall my favorite cellars in Hermitage or Burgundy. And for years, Peique has been bottling microscopic, single barrel amounts of Bierzo Mencía from a collection of tiny, baseball infield-sized single vineyard parcels. These are some of the most detailed, impressive, limited, and critically acclaimed red wines bottled in northern Spain. Located in Valtuille de Abajo (probably the #1 or #2 most important single village for growing Mencía in the world), Luis works with elite terroir, ancient vines, and a patient, spare-no-expense approach in the cellar that has always resulted in undeniably world class wine. The only curveball in this story is that Luis, who has no children interested in taking over his winery, recently decided to retire early. One of my close friends had the good fortune and lucky timing to purchase Luis’ rarest reserve wines at a fraction of their normal cellar price. So, this really is a one time, “buzzer beater” opportunity to experience Luis’ finest work before it’s gone forever!

The 2021 Peique Bierzo “Cova de la Raposa” comes from the historic village of Valtuille de Abajo in Spain’s rugged, rocky Bierzo region, an area celebrated by wine lovers for its steep hillsides and ancient-vine Mencía. The vineyards surrounding the village are planted primarily on decomposed slate, sand and clay soils, which lend the wine both mineral tension, earthy depth, and red fruited / floral lift. Vines planted in the single vineyard parcel or “paraje” behind today’s extraordinary wine, “Cova de la Raposa” are between 60 and 90 years old, producing naturally low yields and remarkable concentration. At Bodegas Peique, the wine is both fermented with careful extraction and aged in a single, 500-liter neutral French oak puncheon to preserve freshness while adding subtle texture and spice. It’s not an exaggeration to say that this quality and detail, if purchased from a cellar in the Northern Rhône or Burgundy, would be priced well into the three-figure range. It’s superb.

Luis Peique’s 2021 Bierzo “Cova de la Raposa” shows a brilliant medium ruby hue with violet reflections and impressive clarity in the glass. Aromas of black raspberry, crushed cherry, violets, wet slate, graphite, and cracked pepper rise immediately from the bowl with remarkable freshness and precision. On the palate, the wine is medium/full-bodied and energetic, offering vibrant red and black fruits layered with smoky minerality, savory herbs, and finely textured tannins supported by bright acidity. The finish is long and persistent, echoing notes of dark berries, iron, dried flowers, and stony earth with elegant lift and balance. Served at 60°F in a large Burgundy stem, the wine’s aromatic complexity and old-vine Mencía character are beautifully amplified. This exceptional red is a thrilling match for braised lamb shanks with mustard and mint, where its freshness and mineral backbone cut effortlessly through the richness of the dish. And don’t forget: this is a bottle that will undoubtedly improve for every one of the next 8-10 years, so do your future self a favor before it disappears forever, and set aside an extra bottle, or three!
