I can’t lie, I’m more excited about today’s wine than any other in recent memory! It’s a no-brainer, five-star jackpot for lovers of gorgeous, cellar-aged red Burgundy. I first encountered this haunting, stunningly complex red snuck into a blind tasting lineup of high-dollar Côte de Nuits red Burgundy all stars. And let me be clear: this bottle didn’t merely “hold its own,” rather, it mopped the floor with the far more expensive, theoretically superior competition. This combination of bottle age, elite real estate, value, and stunning quality doesn’t come along very often.

With today’s truly exceptional 2016 Sur Le Clou, Domaine Millet stakes its claim as one of the Loire Valley’s truly elite Pinot Noir producers. In Burgundy, this level of quality and pitch-perfect bottle age costs a small fortune, but Millet is somehow able to deliver the magic and exquisite detail at a remarkably modest price! As always, fine wine is about fine terroir. And with five continuous generations of farming experience in Sancerre, the Millet family has gradually amassed a treasure trove of top vineyard parcels: La Chêne Marchand and Le Désert for Sauvignon Blanc, and Sur Le Clou, probably the single most important micro-slice of real estate for Pinot Noir in Sancerre’s revered sub-village of Bué. Sur Le Clou’s ferruginous, iron-rich clay soils contain dark stones that absorb daytime heat and release it at night, making this one of Sancerre’s few sites capable of allowing Pinot Noir to achieve full ripeness. It’s a truly unique, special place for growing Pinot Noir. But as we all know, wine isn’t only about location. And fortunately, the Millet family has a few other tricks up its sleeve!

Current-generation grower-winemaker Steve Millet has elevated the family’s Sancerre Rouge Sur Le Clou into one of Sancerre’s most compelling expressions of Pinot Noir. Steve is Burgundy-educated, has logged long hours in the U.S. and abroad, and brings a new level of awareness and sophistication to his family’s cellar. From spring to early fall, Steve spends most waking hours on a tractor. But in the cooler months, he’s completely fixated on cellar work, obsessively improving every detail and piece of equipment in the family’s already impressively well-appointed winery. One remarkable detail of this wine’s élevage is that, every year, Steve is gifted 228-liter François Frères oak barrels from close friends at the legendary Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. These second-year casks impart subtle nuance rather than overt oak flavor, gentle notes of spice, silkiness, and complexity, while allowing the clay-limestone terroir and Pinot Noir character to remain front and center.

Brilliantly mature yet still vibrant in the glass, the 2016 Sancerre Rouge Sur Le Clou shines a transparent ruby-garnet hue with subtle brick reflections at the rim, signaling both pedigree and graceful evolution. The nose is so expressive, with a gorgeousness that’s not easy to put into words—endless, fragile layers of wild strawberry, dried cherry, rose petal, forest floor, crushed autumn leaves, and a distinctive iron-rich mineral note that speaks eloquently of this wine’s celebrated micro-terroir. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied and beautifully resolved, its silky Pinot Noir texture framed by bright acidity and finely integrated tannins that carry flavors of red currant, raspberry, savory herbs, truffle, and earthy spice across the tongue. The finish is long, lifted, and intensely mineral, echoing with notes of dried flowers, wet stone, and subtle umami complexity that invite another sip. For maximum enjoyment, serve at 62°F in a large Burgundy stem to fully experience the wine’s detail and refinement. At the table, I discovered this bottle to be a thrilling companion to a traditional cocotte de lapin, whose slow-braised richness highlights the wine’s savory depth and vibrant freshness. This 2016 vintage is drinking in absolute peak form today, it’s exceptional. And while I don’t think it can possibly get any better, I’m confident it will continue offering peak pleasure for another 18–24 months, so grab an extra bottle or two as a gift for others, or yourself.
