There are certain producers in Burgundy that collectors whisper about for years before the wider market catches on. Domaine Vincent Dureuil-Janthial is now firmly crossing that line. What was once a sommelier and insider secret from the Côte Chalonnaise has become one of the most chased white Burgundy producers in the world, with allocations tightening almost vintage by vintage. Even longtime Burgundy collectors are now openly talking about Dureuil-Janthial in the same breath as many far more expensive Côte de Beaune names. This is one of those producers where people open a bottle for the first time and immediately start searching for more before prices climb even further. Even more remarkable, the Chardonnay for this Bourgogne Blanc comes from a tiny-production, special old-vine parcel on the “Bourgogne” side of the village of Puligny-Montrachet itself, one of the most hallowed white wine villages on earth. That alone helps explain why this wine drinks so wildly above its classification.
Dureuil-Janthial is based in the Côte Chalonnaise, one of the major wine regions of Burgundy located just south of the Côte de Beaune and only a short drive south of the town of Beaune itself. It shares much of the same limestone-rich geology and rolling eastern-facing slopes that make the great white Burgundies of Meursault, Puligny, and Chassagne so legendary, but for decades it lived quietly in their shadow. That is changing rapidly. The region stretches south from Chagny through the villages of Bouzeron, Rully, Mercurey, Givry, and Montagny, each carrying its own distinct personality. Rully, where Dureuil-Janthial is based, has become especially prized for Chardonnay that delivers incredible mineral precision, energy, and tension without the astronomical pricing now attached to the Côte d’Or. The wines from the Côte Chalonnaise often feel like Burgundy before the madness, authentic, terroir-driven, and still offering real value for those paying attention.
Today’s wine is sourced from that tiny-production old-vine parcel on the Bourgogne side of Puligny-Montrachet, and it is outrageous for the level, but it is important to point out that the foundation of this domaine’s greatness comes from Vincent’s incredible work in Rully itself. These are some of the most exciting whites being made anywhere in Burgundy right now, and I will be offering some of those wines soon as well.
Dureuil-Janthial’s rise has not come from marketing hype. It has come from obsessive vineyard work and uncompromising winemaking over decades. Vincent is known for meticulous farming, low yields, careful barrel work, and wines that deliver both intensity and incredible clarity. The style walks a beautiful line between richness and tension: layered Chardonnay fruit wrapped around stony minerality and that perfect kiss of reduction that serious White Burgundy lovers chase. The domaine’s wines consistently overdeliver, and many Burgundy insiders now believe the wines rival producers from far more famous villages at multiples of the price.
The 2023 Bourgogne Blanc is exactly why this producer has become such a phenomenon. Bright citrus, lemon oil, crushed stone, green apple, white flowers, and a beautiful saline snap all come together with remarkable texture and energy for the level. There is real concentration here, but never heaviness. It tastes like serious White Burgundy. Serve around 50–55°F in Burgundy stems and give it 20–30 minutes in a decanter if drinking now. Pair it with roast chicken, Dover sole, scallops in brown butter, Comté cheese, or simple pasta with cream and spring vegetables. This is the kind of bottle that reminds you why White Burgundy remains one of the great wines of the world.
