Today I’m writing about one of my favorite new discoveries - a truly profound bottle that will silence any skeptical Champagne devotee who argues that Spain doesn’t belong in the world's pantheon of elite sparkling wine destinations, Nadal’s 2017 Corpinnat Brut Nature is a work of art. Profoundly complex and breathtakingly precise, this miraculously fair-priced bottle possesses a depth that only patient farming and nearly a decade of cellar aging can produce. To find equivalent maturity, textural sophistication, and sheer character in Champagne, you're generally looking at bottles costing three to four times as much. No joke. And while reasonable people can debate the world's greatest sparkling wine regions, it's increasingly difficult to argue against Corpinnat being the most rigorous, quality-driven traditional-method sparkling wine designation on earth.
That distinction is no accident. Every bottle of Corpinnat must be produced entirely from hand-harvested, estate-grown fruit, farmed organically, vinified at the estate, and aged far longer than the minimum required by Champagne for comparable wines. Industrial shortcuts simply aren't permitted. If these same production standards were imposed on Champagne, the overwhelming majority of its current production would no longer qualify. Corpinnat remains one of the very few appellations where the regulations themselves are designed to reward craftsmanship over volume. And it shows: I've literally never encountered a single bottle in the Corpinnat designation that isn't serious and delicious. It's a remarkable accomplishment.
Founded in 1510, Nadal is among the oldest continuously operating wine estates in all of Spain, with more than five centuries of uninterrupted family stewardship. The estate lies in the heart of Penedès, where limestone-rich soils, Mediterranean sunshine, and cooling nighttime air create ideal conditions for producing sparkling wines of remarkable balance and longevity. Today, the winery is guided by the newest generation of the Nadal family, whose thoughtful stewardship has elevated quality even further while remaining deeply committed to the traditions that made the estate famous.
The 2017 Brut Nature is produced entirely from organically farmed estate fruit, with extended aging on its lees before disgorgement and absolutely no dosage. The absence of added sugar isn't employed as a stylistic statement, but rather as proof that impeccably grown fruit and patient élevage require no cosmetic adjustment. Years spent quietly maturing in bottle have transformed youthful citrus and orchard fruit into layers of toasted brioche, roasted hazelnut, preserved lemon, chamomile, baked apple, and crushed limestone, all supported by a remarkably fine, persistent mousse and a finish of striking mineral precision.
In the glass, the 2017 shimmers with a brilliant pale gold color and an exceptionally fine stream of bubbles. Aromas of baked apple, Meyer lemon, toasted almond, warm brioche, chamomile, and crushed chalk unfold gradually with air, revealing greater complexity with each passing minute. The palate is simultaneously creamy and electric, combining extraordinary depth with laser-like freshness and a long, bone-dry mineral finish that never seems to end. Serve around 50°F in a large Burgundy glass rather than a flute, allowing the wine's remarkable aromatics to fully develop. At the table, it's magnificent alongside a classic Spanish seafood rice, though a simple platter of Jamón Ibérico and aged Manchego may be all the excuse you need to open a bottle.
