It’s no exaggeration to say I’ve been waiting anxiously all year to receive my microscopic, 10 case allocation of today’s extraordinary Brunello. This impossibly rare bottle is one of the most limited wines we’ll offer in 2026. The famously reclusive and gifted farmer-winemaker behind Bolsignano, Roberto Rubegni, doesn’t submit his wines for magazine scores, and there is no social media presence, tasting room, or online store where you can purchase these wines. Roberto hand-bottles a few hundred cases each year in the basement of his family home and sells directly to collectors and a few lucky restaurants in Italy and California - and that’s about it. But it’s the undeniable magic inside the bottle - and the inconceivably fair price - that makes Bolsignano so beloved by Brunello-obsessed sommeliers. Today’s superb 2020 vintage is an instant love affair for anyone who shares my obsession with vintage style, painstakingly handcrafted, truly top tier Tuscan Sangiovese. This is a bottle you can’t miss.
Roberto Rubegni is one of Montalcino's most private and revered farmer-winemakers, preferring quite life among his children, wife, and vines to virtually any public attention. A former motorcycle racer and gifted mechanic, Roberto inherited the Bolsignano estate from his family in 2010 and has since patiently transformed it into one of Brunello's most coveted “secret” addresses. Every aspect of the estate remains intensely personal: Roberto farms the vineyards entirely organically, often with the help of his horse and his enormous 200-pound dog, Astor, and handcrafts every wine in the modest cellar beneath his family home. Rather than following a rigid formula or “recipe”, Roberto allows each vintage to dictate its own path, adapting his decisions to the character of the growing season while remaining faithful to traditional methods. Fermentations are always in barrel, followed by aging for a minimum of three (but often four or five!) years in large Slavonian oak casks, then extended bottle aging before release. The result is a deeply soulful, age-worthy Brunello that reflects both the individuality of the vintage and the uncompromising philosophy of the man behind them.
Podere Bolsignano occupies one of the most coveted positions in all of Montalcino, on a hillside overlooking the village of Tavernelle. With sweeping views down over the celebrated vineyards of Case Basse, the legendary home of the late icon, Gianfranco Soldera, this is one of the most breathtaking, kingly views in Tuscany. This elevated site, just southwest of the town of Montalcino, enjoys abundant southern and southwestern exposure toward the Orcia Valley, where warm days, cool evening breezes, and constant air movement allow Sangiovese to achieve exceptional ripeness without sacrificing freshness or precision. Beneath the vines, a complex mosaic of galestro, alberese limestone, marl, clay, and fractured rock naturally limits vigor, producing fruit with remarkable concentration, mineral tension, and layered aromatic complexity. Tavernelle has long been recognized as one of Brunello's benchmark terroirs, also encompassing iconic sites such as Gaja's Sugarille and Rennina vineyards - but Bolsignano’s elevated location above the village adds a unique “special spice” to the equation that is evident in every vintage of this stellar wine.
The 2020 Bolsignano Brunello di Montalcino pours a deep ruby-garnet, hinting at the concentration and structure of this exceptional vintage. Aromatically, it is both powerful and remarkably nuanced, revealing layers of ripe black cherry, wild blackberry, gingerbread, dried orange peel, cedar, sweet tobacco, baking spices, and crushed limestone. On the palate, the wine balances richness, power, and beautifully integrated tannins that drive a long, persistent, and undeniably luxurious finish. Serve at approximately 64°F in a large Burgundy stem, and allow the wine ample time in the glass as it continues to unfold with each passing hour. It is a magnificent companion to hearty Italian cuisine—especially pappardelle with rabbit Bolognese—where its depth, muscularity, and savory complexity shine brightest. Fewer than 100 cases are imported into the United States each year, making availability exceptionally limited. While already deeply rewarding today, this Brunello has the balance and pedigree to evolve gracefully, gaining even greater complexity over the next 10 to 12 years.
