France is home to many of the world's greatest sparkling wines, but beyond Champagne there are only a handful of bottles that achieve truly legendary status. When discussing great sparkling wine, Champagne naturally dominates the conversation. Yet some of France's most compelling sparkling wines come from regions that apply the same dedication to site, farming, and patient cellar work. Few places are more successful than the Loire Valley. Stretching across central France toward the Atlantic Ocean, the Loire follows one of Europe's great rivers through a landscape shaped by limestone, chalk, clay, and ancient marine sediments. Vouvray sits just east of Tours on the north bank of the Loire River, where Chenin Blanc has found one of its greatest homes. The region's famous tuffeau limestone stores moisture while reflecting light and preserving freshness, creating wines that combine richness, mineral tension, and remarkable aging potential. It is one of France's most historic white wine regions and among the most distinctive.

The Foreau family has farmed vineyards in Vouvray for generations, but it was under the stewardship of François Foreau that the estate became one of the undisputed reference points of the appellation. Today, his son Vincent continues that tradition with the same uncompromising philosophy. The fruit comes from old vines planted in limestone and clay soils and is farmed with extraordinary attention to detail. The wine undergoes a traditional secondary fermentation in bottle and spends years aging sur lie in the estate's cool underground limestone caves. This extended lees aging develops tremendous complexity while preserving the vibrant energy that defines great Chenin Blanc. Nothing about these wines follows fashion. They are timeless, traditional, and deeply expressive of place. For many wine lovers, Domaine Foreau remains the benchmark by which all sparkling Chenin Blanc is measured.

The 2019 Domaine Foreau Sparkling is a breathtaking wine. Aromas of green apple, preserved lemon, pear skin, white flowers, crushed chalk, honeycomb, and freshly baked brioche rise effortlessly from the glass. The palate is simultaneously rich and electric, combining fine persistent bubbles with remarkable mineral drive. There is depth and texture from the outstanding vintage, yet the wine remains focused, precise, and endlessly refreshing. The finish lingers with notes of citrus oil, oyster shell, wet stone, and subtle pastry dough.
