There's something almost unfair about great Sancerre grown on Terres Blanches soils. The combination of Kimmeridgian limestone and clay seems to produce wines with a level of depth and gravitas that Sauvignon Blanc from anywhere else simply can't replicate. The best examples possess a paradoxical personality: broad and textural without sacrificing precision, deeply satisfying but never overbearing. Today's 2022 Raimbault "Terre Blanches" epitomizes that balance. It has the crystalline freshness one expects from Sancerre, but wrapped around a deep core of orchard fruit, crushed chalk and oyster shell and that unmistakable cool, mineral tension that seems to radiate directly from the ancient seabed beneath the vines. It is one of those bottles that reminds you why Sancerre became famous in the first place; and why, in the hands of the right grower, it still sets the global benchmark for Sauvignon Blanc.

The Raimbault family has cultivated vines around Sury-en-Vaux for centuries, with generations of Sancerrois winegrowers passing down both vineyards and practical knowledge from parent to child. Today the domaine continues that tradition with the same philosophy that has always guided the family: thoughtful farming, restrained cellar work, and allowing each of Sancerre's distinct soil types to speak for itself. Situated just a few kilometers from the hill of Sancerre itself, the vineyards benefit from the region's remarkable geological diversity, but the family's finest white wines have long focused on the power and longevity that come from the celebrated Terres Blanches soils.

This cuvée comes from a selection of parcels in the villages of Sury-en-Vaux and neighboring Verdigny, where 55-year-old Sauvignon Blanc vines grow in clay-limestone soils over a classic Kimmeridgean foundation. The vineyards enjoy varied southeast and northwest exposures, giving the finished wine a compelling balance between ripeness and freshness. Following a gentle pressing, fermentation takes place entirely in stainless steel before the wine remains on its fine lees for more than two years, an unusually long élevage that builds remarkable texture and complexity without obscuring the wine's purity. The result is a Sancerre that is simultaneously concentrated and precise, carrying the unmistakable signature of its limestone-rich terroir from the first sip through its lingering finish.

The extended lees aging gives this wine a breadth and quiet confidence that sets it apart from many of the brisk, early-drinking Sancerres on the market today. There is no excess weight or oak-derived richness here, only the slow accumulation of texture and complexity that comes from allowing great fruit to evolve patiently in the tank. The result is a Sauvignon Blanc that feels complete rather than merely refreshing, with enough structure to reward both immediate drinking and several additional years in the cellar.

Brilliant pale straw with silver highlights in the glass, the 2022 "Terre Blanches" opens with aromas of Meyer lemon, white peach, green pear, crushed oyster shell, chamomile, fresh herbs and wet chalk. The palate is medium-bodied, combining a broad, creamy texture, courtesy of its extended lees aging, with vivid acidity and layers of citrus, orchard fruit and dense limestone minerality that never feel heavy. That combination of richness, freshness and mineral drive makes it a natural companion for oysters, chilled lobster, halibut with beurre blanc, roast chicken with herbs, or a simple wedge of Crottin de Chavignol. The finish is long, mouthwatering and beautifully saline, lingering with notes of citrus peel, chalk dust and cool stone long after the final sip. While immensely satisfying today, the concentration from these mature vines and extended élevage should allow the wine to continue developing beautifully over the next five to eight years.
