There are certain wines that stop you in your tracks the moment you lift the glass. Before you even take a sip, you know you're dealing with something special. Jean-François Jacouton's Crozes-Hermitage is one of those wines. You may not know the name yet, but among sommeliers, collectors, and lovers of Northern Rhône Syrah, Jacouton has quietly become one of the region's most exciting producers. Walk his vineyards and you'll immediately understand why. The steep granite terraces look remarkably similar to those of Hermitage itself, dramatic stone-walled slopes carved into the hillside and farmed almost entirely by hand. The aromatics are simply soaring. Black olive, violet, smoked meat, lavender, crushed stone, and dark berries seem to leap from the glass. This is one of my favorite Northern Rhône Syrahs that you've probably never tasted. In fact, when I consider what this wine delivers for under $50, I'm not sure I've ever tasted a better example. It possesses all the soul, complexity, perfume, and unmistakable character that make Northern Rhône Syrah one of the world's greatest wines.

The Northern Rhône remains one of the most magical places in the wine world. Stretching from Côte-Rôtie in the north through Condrieu, Saint-Joseph, Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage, Cornas, and Saint-Péray, this narrow ribbon of vineyards produces some of the most profound wines on earth. Yet every grower knows that not all parcels are created equal. The finest sites are steep, rocky, low-yielding vineyards where the vines struggle, roots burrow deep into granite, and concentration comes naturally. Jacouton's vineyards are farmed organically and with obsessive attention to detail. What I love most about these wines is how immediately captivating they are. The moment you smell the glass, you know you're about to be entertained for hours. Every swirl reveals something new: flowers, smoked meat, black fruit, wild herbs, earth, and the unmistakable mineral signature of the Northern Rhône.

What makes Jean-François Jacouton so compelling is that he is first and foremost a farmer. As a young boy he worked alongside his grandfather in Saint-Joseph before eventually taking over the family vineyards and establishing his own domaine. Much of his work today involves restoring historic terraces by hand, preserving vineyard sites that many growers abandoned long ago because of the immense labor required to farm them. His cellar philosophy is equally thoughtful. Fermentations are gentle, extraction is restrained, and aging takes place in a combination of demi-muids, foudres, amphora, and concrete to preserve freshness and transparency. The result has made Jacouton a favorite among sommeliers and wine directors throughout France and the United States. His wines decorate many of the country's top wine lists because they offer something increasingly rare: authenticity. They taste unmistakably of Northern Rhône Syrah and nowhere else in the world.

The 2022 Crozes-Hermitage is everything I want from great Syrah. Aromas of blackberry, black raspberry, violet, olive tapenade, smoked bacon, lavender, crushed granite, and wild herbs pour from the glass. The palate is vibrant yet structured, offering remarkable concentration without heaviness, supported by fine tannins and a long mineral-driven finish. This is a wine that absolutely belongs at the dinner table. Pair it with grilled lamb chops, duck breast, cassoulet, wild mushroom dishes, braised short ribs, or a simple ribeye cooked over hardwood coals. Serve it around 60 degrees in a large Burgundy stem and give it thirty minutes in a decanter. While absolutely delicious today, it will continue to reward cellaring through at least 2035. There are many Syrahs in the world. Very few capture the magic of the Northern Rhône at this price. Fewer still deliver this level of perfume, complexity, and pure drinking pleasure. Intellectual and delicious.
