The Canary Islands are one of the most special wine terroirs on Earth: a series of volcanic islands in the Atlantic Ocean, just off the northwest coast of Morocco, where vines grow in black lava rock, cooled by ocean winds and shaped by centuries of isolation. If you ever get the chance to visit, this is one of the most exotic destinations in the world, not just for wine, but for gorgeous oceans, waves, dramatic volcanic landscapes, seafood, and deeply soulful island cooking. These wines do not taste like mainland Spain. They taste like wind, salt, smoke, sun, and stone. Linaje del Pago’s 2022 Rojo Carmín captures that entire world in the glass: perfumed, mineral, savory, electric, and completely singular.

The Canary Islands have a long and fascinating history of wine production, dating back to the early days of Spanish exploration, when the islands became an important Atlantic trading post between Europe, Africa, and the Americas. Today, the archipelago is home to several important wine regions across Tenerife, Lanzarote, Gran Canaria, La Palma, El Hierro, La Gomera, and Fuerteventura, each shaped by volcanic soils, altitude, trade winds, and native grape varieties found almost nowhere else. Tenerife alone is divided into distinctive appellations, including Tacoronte-Acentejo, Valle de la Orotava, Ycoden-Daute-Isora, Abona, and Valle de Güímar. Tacoronte-Acentejo, on the northern side of Tenerife, is one of the most exciting areas, with vineyards climbing above the Atlantic and rooted in mineral-rich volcanic earth. This region is coming up quickly because it has everything serious wine lovers chase today: ancient native grapes, real volcanic terroir, freshness, energy, and wines that speak clearly of place.

Linaje del Pago is a young estate, founded in 2017 in El Sauzal, with a focus on preserving Tenerife’s native varieties and presenting them with purity rather than weight. Rojo Carmín is made from Listán Negro, the signature red grape of Tenerife, and the wine is fermented and raised in stainless steel to preserve its freshness, aromatics, and volcanic character. The Canary Islands are geologically young, born from volcanic activity rising out of the Atlantic, and that geology defines everything here: porous black rock, dramatic slopes, ocean mist, and vines that often grow in conditions unlike anywhere else in Europe. Rather than making a heavy international red, Linaje del Pago gives us something far more compelling — a wine that feels ancient and modern at the same time, rooted in centuries of island viticulture but made with clarity, precision, and tremendous drinkability.

In the glass, Rojo Carmín opens with crushed wild strawberries, red currants, blood orange, dried herbs, black pepper, and a faint smoky volcanic note. The palate is medium-bodied, silky, and incredibly energetic, with bright acidity, fine tannins, and a long mineral finish. It reminds me of somewhere between Cru Beaujolais, elegant Etna Rosso, and cool-climate Pinot Noir, yet ultimately tastes like Tenerife and nowhere else. Serve lightly chilled, around 58–60°F, in a Burgundy stem after a brief 20-minute decant. Pair it with grilled octopus, roast chicken, jamón Ibérico, smoky chorizo, lamb, tuna, papas arrugadas with mojo, or a table full of tapas. This is absolutely delicious today, but it should continue to evolve beautifully over the next five to seven years.
