RAEN is one of the most exciting wine projects to emerge from California in decades — the kind of project that instantly feels important the moment you taste it. Carlo and Dante Mondavi, grandsons of Robert Mondavi, grew up immersed in the world of great wine, with formative visits to the great domaines of Burgundy — Domaine de la Romanée-Conti chief among them — shaping their earliest understanding of what Pinot Noir could be. That vision became real when Carlo spent the 2014 harvest at Domaine Dujac, one of Burgundy’s most soulful estates, where whole-cluster fermentation, site transparency, and wines built on energy define the style. When the brothers launched RAEN — Research in Agriculture and Enology Naturally — they set out with a singular focus: Pinot Noir from the far western Sonoma Coast. They believed this raw, ocean-battered landscape held world-class potential, but only if approached with the right clones, organic farming, and restraint in the cellar. The result today is unmistakable — Pinot Noirs that feel alive, layered with umami, tension, and lift — wines that stand apart in California and echo the spirit of Dujac in their balance and complexity.
To understand RAEN, you have to understand the Mondavi story — and California wine itself. While Robert Mondavi is most often associated with Napa Valley Cabernet, he had a deep fascination with Pinot Noir and the wines of Burgundy. He believed Pinot was one of the purest expressions of terroir — but also one of the most difficult grapes to get right — and spent years exploring cooler regions and projects that could capture that delicacy and nuance. That curiosity and admiration for Burgundy left a lasting imprint on the family. It’s no coincidence that the next generation pushed further west, beyond Napa, chasing the same ideals. The Sonoma Coast — especially its westernmost reaches — is one of the most extreme growing environments in California. Vineyards sit close to the Pacific, often above the fog line but constantly cooled by it, with poor, well-draining soils of sandstone and marine sediment. The growing season stretches long and slow, preserving acidity and building complexity. This is not a place for power — it’s a place for precision, and for Pinot Noir that speaks more in tension and detail than in weight.
RAEN is built on a philosophy that starts in the vineyard and ends with transparency in the glass. The name itself — Research in Agriculture and Enology Naturally — reflects a relentless commitment to understanding site, farming, and natural expression. Their vineyards are farmed organically and with regenerative principles, often in extreme, remote coastal sites where yields are low and conditions are unforgiving. Winemaker Melanie Lerner works alongside Carlo and Dante to translate this raw terroir with a light hand. Fermentations lean heavily on whole clusters, bringing aromatic lift, structure, and that signature savory edge. Native yeasts, gentle extraction, and minimal intervention define the approach — nothing forced, nothing polished away. The Royal St. Robert cuvée, named in honor of their grandfather, is a blend of coastal vineyard sites designed to capture the essence of RAEN’s style: purity, energy, and a deep connection to place.
In the glass, the 2024 Royal St. Robert is electric. Aromas leap from the glass — wild strawberry, raspberry, blood orange zest, rose petals, coastal forest floor, and a subtle thread of spice and tea leaf from the whole clusters. The palate is vibrant and finely etched, with red fruits wrapped around a mineral spine, silky tannins, and a driving acidity that carries through a long, lifted finish with a faint saline edge. This is Pinot Noir that moves — precise, energetic, and deeply expressive. Serve it slightly cool in a Burgundy stem and pair it with classic Pinot dishes: roast chicken, duck with cherry or plum, pork tenderloin, mushroom risotto, or anything built around earthy flavors like truffle and forest mushrooms. It’s equally compelling with charcuterie and aged cheeses.
This is California Pinot Noir at a different level — thoughtful, soulful, and unmistakably world-class.
