Imagine if someone offered you a perfectly mature, reserve bottling from a legendary estate in Burgundy, Barolo, or Bordeaux for $65. We'd all rent a U-Haul and buy as much as we could fit inside, right? It’s a fantasy scenario in most prime EU appellations, but one that actually exists in Rioja. Today's 2015 Señorío de P. Peciña "Finca Iscorta" Gran Reserva is proof: an extremely limited, long-aged wine from one of Rioja's most uncompromising traditional estates, sourced entirely from one of its finest vineyards and released only after nearly a decade of patient aging. This explosive red delivers the complexity, pedigree, and effortless maturity that collectors chase in the world's most celebrated regions, but at a price that seems almost disconnected from reality. This is a memorable, special wine and I can’t wait for you to experience it.
What separates Finca Iscorta from virtually every other Gran Reserva in Rioja is that it is not simply a selection of the estate's best barrels—it is a true single-vineyard wine. The eight-hectare Finca Iscorta lies near Labastida at roughly 500 meters above sea level, its fifty-year-old bush vines rooted in calcareous clay soils and facing north, an unusually cool exposition that preserves freshness even in warm vintages. Only the finest fruit from the vineyard is reserved for this bottling. Fermentation proceeds naturally with indigenous yeasts before the wine spends an astonishing four years in seasoned American oak, undergoing the traditional manual racking every six months that has become a hallmark of Hermanos Peciña. It then rests for at least another three years in bottle before release, emerging with a level of harmony and complexity that simply cannot be rushed. Bottled without fining or filtration, it represents one of Rioja's purest surviving expressions of classical winemaking.
The 2015 vintage provided an extraordinary foundation for a wine of this ambition. Across Rioja Alta, warm, dry conditions produced exceptionally healthy fruit with tremendous concentration, while cool nights and the vineyard's northerly exposure preserved acidity and aromatic lift. Critics have praised Finca Iscorta as one of the estate's finest modern releases, noting its remarkable balance between traditional Rioja elegance and the depth afforded by the exceptional vintage. The result is a Gran Reserva of uncommon stature: powerful without heaviness, deeply layered yet effortlessly graceful, combining profound fruit concentration with the savory complexity that only extended cellar aging can create.
Serve at 64°F in a large Bordeaux stem after a brief decant to allow the bouquet to fully unfurl. Pair it with the timeless elegance of Pato a la Riojana, Rioja's classic braised duck, where slow-cooked duck, roasted peppers, tomatoes, garlic, and smoked paprika create a dish whose earthy richness mirrors every dimension of the wine. The mature Tempranillo's cedar, leather, dried herbs, tobacco, and balsamic notes seem almost purpose-built for the deep savory flavors of the stew, while its vibrant acidity keeps each bite feeling fresh rather than heavy. In the glass, expect a deep garnet color with a lightly burnished rim, followed by soaring aromas of black cherry, dried raspberry, cedar chest, cigar box, sandalwood, leather-bound books, forest floor, balsamic herbs, vanilla, and warm baking spice. The palate is simultaneously broad and remarkably refined, with silky, fully integrated tannins supporting layers of dark fruit, dried flowers, tobacco leaf, espresso, and crushed stone before giving way to an extraordinarily long, seamless finish that lingers for well over a minute. This is traditional Rioja at its absolute finest: patient, soulful, unapologetically classical, and a compelling reminder that some of the world's greatest cellar-aged wines remain astonishingly affordable.
