A few times each year, I discover a bottle of truly epic, perfectly mature, Cabernet Sauvignon-driven Bordeaux. Not merely "old," but carefully aged and optimally evolved—where the once-firm tannins have softened into silk, the primary fruit has transformed into cedar, tobacco, dried blackcurrant, and forest floor, and every component seems to move with effortless harmony. Today's 2010 Closerie du Pelan epitomizes that elusive stage, and equally compelling is its provenance. The estate has long been a close neighbor and philosophical kindred spirit of the increasingly iconic Château Le Puy, and today the vineyards are owned and farmed by Le Puy's proprietors, the Amoreau family. The result is a wine that shares Le Puy's uncompromising devotion to organic farming and transparent winemaking while selling for a mere fraction of the price commanded by Le Puy's own 2010 release. For lovers of classically styled Bordeaux, this is a bottle not to be missed.

Closerie du Pelan occupies an exceptional clay-limestone plateau extending from the Roc de Saint-Émilion in the Francs-Côtes de Bordeaux, where Cabernet Sauvignon finds uncommon freshness and aromatic precision. The estate was established in the early 1980s by Régis Moro, who embraced organic farming decades before it became fashionable and earned official certification in 2008. Fermentations relied exclusively on native yeasts, extraction remained intentionally gentle, and the wines matured patiently in older barrels before bottling without fining or filtration. It was precisely this uncompromising philosophy that attracted Jean-Pierre Amoreau and the Le Puy family, longtime friends and neighbors who ultimately assumed ownership of the estate while preserving every aspect of its low-intervention approach.

The 2010 vintage could scarcely have provided a better canvas. Widely regarded as one of Bordeaux's modern classics, it endowed Cabernet Sauvignon with extraordinary concentration while preserving the freshness and structure necessary for graceful evolution. Sixteen years later, the wine has arrived at that magical point where youthful power has transformed into complexity. Cassis has given way to blackcurrant preserve, cigar box, cedar chest, graphite, dried violets, leather, woodland herbs, and cool earth. The palate remains remarkably energetic, with polished tannins supporting a long, mineral finish that speaks more of limestone than oak. It is an eloquent reminder that great mature Bordeaux need not cost hundreds of dollars.

Serve at 63–64°F in a large Bordeaux stem after a brief decant to remove sediment and allow the bouquet to fully emerge. Pair it with the timeless elegance of duck à l'orange. The richness of the duck beautifully echoes the wine's mature texture, while the bitter orange, caramelized skin, and savory pan sauce highlight the wine's evolved cedar, tobacco, and dark-fruit aromatics. This is one of those special combinations where neither food nor wine competes for attention; instead, each seems to complete the other. Expect a deep garnet color with a slight brick rim; aromas of blackcurrant, cedar, graphite, cigar box, leather, dried herbs, and forest floor; a medium-to-full-bodied palate carried by silky, resolved tannins and vibrant acidity; and an exceptionally long, savory finish that lingers with mineral precision. This is a pitch-perfect example of mature Bordeaux, with at least another four to six years of vibrant evolution ahead. In addition to a bottle for your immediate enjoyment, I encourage you to grab a few extra bottles for the cellar.
