Before delving into the details behind today's exceptional white, I want to mention how much joy its cheeky “scratch and win” label has brought to my home in the last 24 hours! My kids love playing with the bottle almost as much as I enjoyed drinking it! But take my word that, underneath the gimmick is a seriously compelling Albariño and, frankly, a reminder of something that has become increasingly difficult to find in Rías Baixas: mind-boggling value. Over the last 10 to 12 years, serious Albariño has joined the ranks of elite mineral white wines like Sancerre, Chablis, Grüner Veltliner and Loire Chenin. In other words, a region that, throughout the 1990s and 2000s, was practically synonymous with unbelievable value is now home to a growing collection of tiny-production, single-vineyard and old-vine unicorn cuvées carrying appropriately ambitious prices. Today’s Vanidade is the opposite. It delivers vivid, three-dimensional Rías Baixas terroir and perfect mouthwatering freshness at an everyday price. It's everything I want from white wine during the three-digit dog days of September.

Viña Almirante is unusual in another way. Rather than being the vanity project of a wealthy proprietor, it grew out of a group of local winegrowers who came together in 2000 to revive viticulture around Portas. Today the winery represents 80 partners and families, with approximately 45 hectares of vineyards scattered throughout the surrounding countryside and Val do Salnés. The project is deeply connected to this corner of Galicia, where vineyards exist as a fragmented mosaic of tiny parcels rather than enormous contiguous estates. That local grower structure is part of the reason Vanidade can deliver so much wine for the money: this is Albariño rooted in a community of people who actually farm here, rather than fruit purchased to manufacture another international Rías Baixas brand.

And Val do Salnés remains the spiritual heartland of Albariño. This is the coolest, wettest and most Atlantic-influenced sector of Rías Baixas, surrounding Cambados and pushing toward the ocean along Galicia's deeply indented coastline. The soils are dominated by granite, often decomposed into coarse sand, and the vines traditionally grow high above the ground on pergolas supported by massive granite posts. Everything about the system is adapted to this extraordinarily humid environment. Elevating the canopy improves airflow, while the poor, free-draining granitic soils provide the counterpoint to all that Atlantic rain. The resulting wines can possess an extraordinary combination of ripe stone fruit, piercing acidity and the saline, almost electrically mineral character that has made great Albariño increasingly coveted around the world.

Vanidade comes from roughly 40-year-old Albariño vines rooted in sandy, granitic soils and farmed organically without certification. The grapes are harvested by hand, fully destemmed and partially cryomacerated before a cool fermentation in stainless steel. There is no oak and no attempt to manufacture richness. The cold skin contact simply extracts another layer of Albariño's aromatic and textural personality before fermentation, while stainless steel preserves the immediacy of the fruit and the Atlantic freshness that defines the wine. The result is not trying to imitate the increasingly elaborate, cellar-aged prestige bottlings of modern Rías Baixas. Its ambition is simpler and, in its own way, more appealing: capture really good Salnés Albariño as vividly and directly as possible, put it in a bottle and somehow keep the price almost absurdly low.

Serve the 2025 Vanidade around 46–50°F in a proper white-wine glass, cold enough to emphasize its Atlantic freshness but not so cold that its aromatics disappear. The color is brilliant pale straw with flashes of green. The nose explodes with lime zest, white peach, green melon and crisp pear, followed by orange blossom, wet granite and a distinctly oceanic suggestion of sea spray. On the palate, the wine is wonderfully three-dimensional for something so inexpensive: juicy stone fruit and citrus arrive first, followed immediately by taut acidity, a faintly rounded mid-palate texture and that characteristic Salnés combination of crushed stone and mouthwatering salinity. The finish snaps back toward lime peel, green apple, white flowers and sea salt, leaving the mouth refreshed rather than exhausted. Pair it with Vieiras a la Gallega, scallops baked in their shells beneath a traditional mixture of onion, white wine, breadcrumbs and other savory aromatics. The sweetness of the scallop pulls forward Albariño's peach and citrus fruit, while the wine's acidity slices through the richness of the sofrito and its saline, granitic finish mirrors the shellfish itself. It is difficult to imagine a more natural combination: cold Atlantic white wine beside one of Galicia's great Atlantic ingredients, each making the other taste even more intensely of the place it came from.
